Embla Books lands two laugh-out-loud romcoms from debut author Kirstie Pelling

Embla Books, the digital-first imprint of Bonnier Books UK, has acquired two romantic comedies from journalist and debut author, Kirstie Pelling.

Hannah Smith, Editorial Director, acquired world English language rights from Caroline Michel at PFD.

The first book in the deal, Life’s a Catastrophe, will publish in eBook and audio in February 2022 – it’s described as Sophie Kinsella meets Fiona Gibson.

Aly Meadows is just trying to get by, but it turns out this isn’t getting her very far. She’s treated terribly at work, her flat is a disaster and her bank balance is looking rather pathetic. But at least she has her cats, who have managed to make a name for themselves online as ‘catfluencers’. As her world spirals even further, Aly finds herself asking – what would I do if I were a cat? And so begins Aly’s journey to self-discovery.

Smith said: “Aly Meadows – and her cats – had me laughing and smiling from the first moment I began Life’s a Catastrophe. Kirstie writes such relatable characters, with a story that calls out to anyone who doesn’t quite have everything together (and who does?), as Aly shows the world one thing while battling with another. Kirstie is a brilliant author, and I am ecstatic to be welcoming her onto the Embla list.’

Pelling added: “I can’t think of a better home for my first book than Bonnier and Embla Books. My novel is set in the dynamic, fast paced world of digital influencers and talent managers, where innovative campaigns and eye-catching social posts can be career changing. From my earliest conversation with Hannah, I became convinced the digital- savvy team behind Embla have the ideas and experience to make an impact in a crowded marketplace.’

The second book under contract will publish in Autumn 2022.
