Maisie Chan shortlisted for Jhalak Children’s and YA Prize.

Maisie Chan’s heart-warming Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths, illustrated by Anh Cao, has been shortlisted for the Jhalak Children’s and YA Prize.

Published by Piccadilly Press, Danny Chung Does Not Do Maths tells the tale of cartoon-crazy Danny, and his relationship with his grandmother. Set in Birmingham, the whip-smart novel balances delicate insights into inter-generational relationships and British Chinese culture with frequent bursts of laugh-out-loud comedy.

The Jhalak Children’s and YA Prize seeks to celebrate books ‘by writers of colour aimed at young readers’, and has been awarded since 2020.

The winner will be announced on May 26th 2022 and will be judged by acclaimed authors Sufiya Ahmed; Nii Ayikwei Parkes; and last year’s winner for Eight Pieces of Silva, Patrice Lawrence.

It is the latest awards recognition for Chan’s sparkling debut children’s novel, which was also shortlisted in the Best Story category at the prestigious Blue Peter Book Awards. Her next novel, Keep Dancing, Lizzie Chu, will publish this summer with Piccadilly Press.
