Four Bonnier Books UK authors and illustrators nominated for 2020 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Awards
Hot Key Books authors Yasmin Rahman and Jennifer Donnelly have been nominated for the 2020 CILIP Carnegie Medal. Templar creators Professor Raman Prinja and Chris Wormell (illustrator of Philip Pullman’s Book of Dust series) have been nominated for the 2020 Kate Greenaway Awards.
Rahman is nominated for her debut YA novel All The Things We Never Said and Donnelly is nominated for her recent YA novel Stepsister. Donnelly previously won the 2003 CILIP Carnegie Medal for her novel A Gathering Light. Wormell and Prinja are nominated for Planetarium, part of the Welcome to the Museum series and published with the endorsement of the Science Museum.
The CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are the UK’s oldest and most prestigious children’s book awards, recognising outstanding writing and illustration in books for children and young people.
Rahman’s powerful and widely acclaimed debut, All The Things We Never Said, is a moving and poignant story celebrating life, friendship, strength and survival. It’s also one of the few books for young adults that feature a Muslim protagonist where her faith is just a given — “not an issue, not part of the plot, just a thing that’s there.” Rahman discusses representation in YA fiction and her journey to publication with Bonnier Books UK here.
Donnelly’s Stepsister is a powerful feminist retelling of the Cinderella fable that follows the story of Isabelle – the younger of Cinderella’s two stepsisters. Throughout the story Isabelle must face down the demons that drove her own cruelty towards her sister, as well as challenging her own fate and the very notion of beauty. The impactful and timely story is the latest addition Donnelly’s impressive canon. A New York Times bestselling author and the author of fourteen books, Donnelly has won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the Borders Original Voices Award, the 2003 CILIP Carnegie Medal. Her novel The Gathering Light is named a Printz Honor Book.
Prinja and Wormell’s Planetarium is an expertly curated non-fiction for children, brought to life by Wormell’s award-winning illustrations and clear, informative text by Prinja, professor of astrophysics at University College London. The Welcome to the Museum series has sold over 1 million copies around the world.
The longlist for the 2020 CILIP Carnegie Medal will be announced 20 February 2020.
