The Tattooist of Auschwitz is Wordery’s Book of the Year

On Wednesday 28th November, online bookshop Wordery.com announced its Book of the Year 2018, as voted for by Wordery customers.

The shortlist included Karin Slaughter’s Pieces of Her (HarperCollins), The Lido by Libby Page (Orion) and Steven King’s The Outsider (Hodder & Stoughton), to name a few. However, it was Heather Morris’ bestselling debut The Tattooist of Auschwitz, published in February by Zaffre, that won the Wordery customer’s vote.

The no.1 Sunday Times bestseller, which is currently in its 8th week at the top of the General Paperback chart, is based on the true story of Lale Sokolov, the tattooist of Auschwitz concentration camp, who fell in love with fellow prisoner Gita in 1942, as she waited in line to be tattooed.

The tattoos became one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust and, in an interview with the BBC, Morris notes how “[t]he story took three years to untangle. I had to earn his trust and it took time before he was willing to embark on the deep self-scrutiny that parts of his story required.”

The Tattooist of Auschwitz, which was also selected as part of Richard and Judy’s October Book Club, is available to purchase online and in all good bookstores.
